A newspaper clipping regarding the achievement by Phyllis, at a time when a female pilot was absolutely unheard of in Newfoundland. At the this time, Newfoundland was still a colony of of Britain, entering into Confederation with Canada in 1949.

During the winter following Phyllis' pilot training, the Piper Cub in which she learned crashed into the ice at Deadman's Pond. The instructor and the student were both injured, but survived to tell the tale.
