INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE STRAIT OF CANSO - After the Canso Causeway was completed in 1955, the ferry terminals on both sides of the Strait of Canso and railway terminus were removed which led to significant job losses. Town leaders and officials realized that the Causeway would give them a safe, deep water, ice-free harbour to expand the economic base for the community.
The Four Counties Development Association made up of men representing Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond Counties became part of the driving force behind bringing a pulp mill to the Strait of Canso. Their tireless promotion of the new harbour was also instrumental in encouraging other industries to come to the area. One by one international companies recognized the value of the harbour for shipping.
