On September 7th the Saskatoon Star Phoenix daily newspaper reported the Canadian Parliment was in a war session. Canada officially declared war on September 10th and that happened to be a Sunday when the Star Phoenix did not publish a paper. From September 1939 until the end of 1945 Saskatoon would become a center supporting military training in addition to supporting agriculture. Training for all three services of land, sea, and air were supported. These being the Saskatoon Light Infantry Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, Royal Canadian Engineers, and Royal Canadian Service Corps for the army.
HMCS Unicorn Naval Reserve and the No. 4 Service Flying Training School for the navy and air force respectively.

I decided I would join the air force, alot of my friends already decided and had gone to the army and navy and I was not going to be left alone. So I enlisted in 1941 and I was posted to the Manning Depot in Edmonton Alberta. I did some guard duty and miscelaneous things and after being there three months I was posted to No. 4 Initial School in Edmonton. We took schooling at the University of Alberta. After
doing ground work there I was posted to No.5 Elementary Flying School at High River Alberta where I learnt to fly on the Tiger Moth. One interesting thing about the Tiger Moth was on my very first solo after doing some aerobatics, my engine stalled and I had to make a forced landing in a summer fallow field and I thought I am going to get washed out for that. But I was in no fear there at all and my instructor said to me "No that is a big plus for you by landing in a summer fallow field". So after that, a couple of months there I was posted to Saskatoon Saskatchewan's No. 4 Service Flying School
Where I got my wings on December the 12th 1942. I got married on the 16th of December of 1942 and left for overseas Christmas Eve, December the 24th.
