Hey! Having a little kips no crime. I've got to cover the Temperance Rally this evening. The whole town will be there... except for the rumrunners. They'll have those kegs rollin' up Main Street by midnight...

And I know who's bringing it in. They're the only ones in town building new houses. If the pro'bition cutter is in the Bay tonight; boys, there'll be a spree for sure. Take last month... I heard that the Mounties were going to raid the Block and Oar Factory. Not on the factory, you understand: a raid on the sawdust piles... The locals hide their rum kegs in the hills of sawdust outside the factory. It was that afternoon that I was crossing the bridge and I see Joe Turner walking down the other side. He and I being old friends, I said to no-on in particular "Raid tonight." That's all... Then my wife wakes me at 2:30 in the morning saying 'Ozzie! There's some kind of commotion in the backyard.'

So I go out and I find the storm door wide open and a 5 gallon keg lying on the cellar steps. Well, I almost croaked. I could just see myself getting caught with all that illegal booze. I'd lose my job and my house, not near paid for. I ran around in circles for a bit, then came over here and got my Dad. He was town constable before he retired. I figured he'd know what to do. Well, it was dawn before we got that keg bottled up... and you know where my kitchen roof line is? We can get into the wall from the bedroom.

We put a string around the neck of each bottle and hung them in the walls between the studs. Hah! The Mounties will never find them there...
