Alice Hagen's legacy

In 1966, Alice Egan Hagen donated a large body of her work, including china-painted vessels, pottery items and oil paintings to Mount Saint Vincent University. However, in 1958, she had already donated some of the finest examples of her china painting to the Nova Scotia Museum. The items provided were at first alone, and then in 1960 the Nova Scotia Museum purchased a selection of works for the collection. Most of the other Hagen items in the Nova Scotia Museum were gifts from the artist.

In 1976 the MSVU Art Gallery mounted a major exhibition of her work. In 1982 a Symposium on Hagen's work attracted a number of prominent artists and historians, including Marie Elwood, then the Curator of History at the Nova Scotia Museum, and Homer Lord, a former student of Hagen's, and Walter Ostrom, both members of the faculty at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

In 1992 a panel discussion of Alice Egan Hagen's work was held, and contributors included her former student Homer Lord, by then a member of the faculty of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, his colleague, ceramicist Walter Ostrom, and Marie Elwood of the Nova Scotia Museum.

In May, 1984, The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design opened the Alice Hagen Kiln Building, located at 1873 Hollis Street in Halifax. It is an important and long-lived commemoration of Hagen's contribution to ceramics in Nova Scotia. From 28 May until 14 June the Anna Leonowens Gallery held an exhibition of Hagen's work. Marie Elwood, recognized as the expert on Hagen and her work, was the guest curator of the exhibition. (1)
