Captain Ken Saunders was born on Gooseberry Island in 1918 and came to Glovertown when he was only nine years old.

He learned to build boats from his father. When he was eighteen or nineteen years old he started building boats on his own. He built various boat types such as: punts/rodneys eighteen feet in length; trapskiffs thirty feet in length; two long liners fifty-four feet in length; and he helped build five schooners that ranged from eighty-one to one hundred feet in length.

Captain Saunders, now retired, has a Masters Captain Certificate. In May 1953 he received his Certificate as Master which certified that his sobriety, ability, and general good conduct qualified him, under the Canada Shipping Act, 1934, to be master of a steamship not being a tugboat and not carrying passengers, in the hometrade. He's capable of taking a vessel of up to 1000-ton and sailing her around Newfoundland and Labrador and also across the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Captain Saunders began his studies in Glovertown and then went to the navigational school in St. John's in 1952 where he wrote and passed his test.
