Charlie Hodge

Charlie Hodge's parents immigrated to Innisfail from Gourock, Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1907 with four of their children, Marion, Katie, Edith, and Charlie, who was the youngest. They immigrated so that they would be near their two older boys, Willie and Hugh, who immigrated to the area in 1905. Charlie attended school in Innisfail. He later married May Taylor, and they had two children, Gertie and Catherine.

In spite of having a family Charlie enlisted in the army and went overseas. He was killed on November 6, 1917 at the Battle of Pashendaele in France. His body was never found so he was listed as missing in action. His wife was likely quite distraught at having lost a husband and being left with two young children in the days before social welfare nets were in place. After the war was over, May went to France to see where her husband died and to come to terms with his death. Charlie's father had died of natural causes in Innisfail in May, 1917. In 1923 Charlie's mother returned to Greenrock in Scotland where she died a few years later.
