The people mainly came to the Narrows at first by Steamboats. Then the railroad was built through where Ashern is now. The railroad landing was called Dodd's Siding and 7th Siding before they named the town after me in 1918. In 1911 and 1912 lots of settlers came but by 1920 many left. Why?

When Manitoba was being settled the southern parts filled up first taking the best grain growing farmlands. The government wanted to bring more people in to settle other areas as well. Rural Municipalities began to publish advertisements such as this to let potential settlers know what the area had to offer.
The RM of Siglunes and Woodlea put out this booklet around 1930.
"It all sounded so positive but perhaps the difficulties were minimized for a price."

The Municipal office was the place people came to pay taxes and ask for improvements. The councilors and reeve were the people that dealt with requests, grievances and disputes between neighbors. In 1938 the council intervened in a dispute between two neighbors. The whole situation became the subject of a poem............
