The St. Georges Hotel was built in 1914 by Mr. D. Safiolos. It housed offices for the Standard Bank, offices for Doctors and lawyers until proper buildings could be built. In 1928 it burned down.
The hotel had a colourful atmosphere. One such story is as follows:
Apparently the proprieter would cook "Home Brew" upstairs at the hotel. On one occasion whoever had to dispose of the "sour mash", fed it to the pigs in an attached building. The pigs got drunk and started squealing, jumping around and finally broke through a storm window.
As one old pioneer put it "Life was tough for chicken and pigs in the early days!!"
