Before 1921, children living on or near the Ioco refinery attended a one room schoolhouse on the beach of the Burrard Inlet. The first teacher at Ioco, Miss Haley, rowed a boat from Port Moody to teach. In 1921, a school was built on the newly constructed Ioco townsite on the corner of Ioco Road and 1st Avenue. It had four classrooms and four teachers and could hold up to one hundred students. Ioco School taught children from the first grade to university entrance. It remained an independent school until 1946 when it joined School District 43. In later years, a gymnasium was added to the building. Ioco School was used up until the mid 2000's as an alternative school for Port Moody school district 43.2

Students at the Ioco School studied many subjects including math, language arts, sewing and cooking for the girls and wood working and drafting for the boys. They also participated in field trips to the surrounding area such as hiking up Eagle Mountain.8
