Hemmons had been manager of the Miniota Mutual when it was taken over by the Wawanesa Mutual in the 1920's. He became Vanstone's Assistant Manager. Then in 1943 he became Manager, despite being close to retirement himself.

Hemmons focus was consolidation, caution and personal initiative. He guided the company through to the end of the war. Many companies showed losses at this time but Wawanesa posted its best year ever!

Tragedy struck the family and village when the Hemmon's only son Bob was killed atop the high cliff above his home. His air force training plane had crashed on takeoff. mA unique stained glass window in St. Paul's Anglican Church was donated in Bob's memory by the family.

Harry Hemmons retired in 1948 leaving the company in excellent shape for the post war economic boom.
