Crossing the street we have the Bentley Hotel (5025 - 50 Ave.) which was built by Morrisroe in 1939.The present owner, Stan VandenBroek operates the hotel, coffee shop and the liquor outlet. A few previous owners and managers and not necessarily in order were, J. Morrisroe,H. Rawleigh, E. Pashyka,W. Dorn,E. Lenz, L. Benson, K. Rabasy, L. Gray, Mr. Atkinson, D. Prosse,S. Morafkof, Ed Watson, Mr. Soderstrom, Wayne Reimer, Ed Anderson, Smiley and Ben Thaagard. A new creamery was built in the early thirties on the west side of the hotel.
Bentley Agencies built a new building on the next lot in 1993. The next two lots are owned by the Wines. The lot to the west is vacant. This property is the old Williams and Wiese building better known as the brick building. Built in 1920 it was used as a hotel with a large hall on the west side that was used for community functions. Don Wong operated the first Chinese café out of this building in the 1930's. In 1944, Mr. Gilroy operated a bake shop on the west side. In 1946 Red Garries and Dick Moore started Valley Electric here. This business has been in operation since that time. Red and Doris Garries and Sons operated the electrical business in later years and now it is operated by their son, Bob Garries. The next store on the east side of the building was a plumbing shop. When the Wines purchased the building they did extensive renovations and two suites were made upstairs which are rented out to this day. For years the Wines operated a successful welding and machine shop in the rear of the building. After the plumbing shop moved, the east side was rented by Linda Kind who opened up Bentley Video Rentals, she in turn sold to Cliff & Cora Knutson in 1996. The Knutsons moved the video store further east. The space has been rented out to a few businesses through the last few years and is now rented by Tina Whitfield who operates "The Trickle Trunk".
The next building was a barber shop. Barbers working out of this shop were J. Bullock, Fred Chapman, Mr. Kraft, Erven Palmer and Tom Pye who later moved across the street. The building was demolished to make room for the service station.
The telephone system was installed in 1908 and the exchange was in George Garries" house, then it was moved into the next building east of the barber shop. Mrs Dee Finch was the chief operator, and the assistants, Mrs. Pearl McKilligan and Esther McKilligan. With the coming of automatic phones, the exchange was moved further east. The building was finally demolished or moved.
In 1935, Ray Trenholme, built a B.A. Service station on the corner of Mrs.Finch's lot, with a tea room in connection. Ray and Mrs Finch ran this business as partners. Later Miss Jenny Holmen operated a ladies wear shop followed by Miss. Rose McNaught. In 1954 both lots east of the Wine building were purchased by Carl Haarstad and the existing buildings were removed to make way for a service station selling White Rose products. After Carl left the business, Chester Miller operated it as a Shell Service Station later the business switched to "Turbo". In 1987, Larry and Loretta Swainston purchased the property and Esso bought out Turbo. In 1994, Larry and Loretta sold to" Fast Gas". Fast Gas operated the station with different manages for a few years. In 2009 the buildings were removed and the property remains vacant.
