INTRODUCTION

Northern Ontario has a rich history of cultural production, and today there are many arts organizations serving communities throughout the region specializing in a wide variety of artistic practices. The unique landscape of Northern Ontario, made internationally famous by Tom Thompson and the Group of Seven, has always inspired artists, and the equally unique arts organizations of the region continue to inspire and support creativity in their communities with each successive generation of artists.

This exhibit presents an exploratory journey through several communities across Northern Ontario, profiling many of the arts organizations of the region along the way. Through an examination of these organizations, their history, their communities and their current organizational focus, we hope to demonstrate what contributions Northern Ontario makes to arts and culture and to promote these organizations to the general public.

We will begin our journey in Callander, travelling north along Highway 11 to Thunder Bay, and returning via Highway 17 through Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury back to North Bay. We have included contact information for each of the profiled organizations and municipalities for anyone interested in finding out more. We hope you enjoy the exhibit!
