The next location on our tour of Northern Ontario is Thunder Bay, located on the north-western shores of Lake Superior. Thunder Bay is one of Canada’s Great Outdoor Adventure Cities mixed with a rich cultural urban tapestry. Under the protective watch of the Sleeping Giant, Thunder Bay is rich in people and resources, and connects Northwestern Ontario to the world through its partnership with five Sister Cities. Thunder Bay is the largest community on Lake Superior. With a population of 109,140, it is the most populous municipality in Northwestern Ontario. The city gets its name from its location on the immense bay at the head of Lake Superior, known on 18th century French maps as "Baie du Tonnerre." The city is often referred to as the Lakehead because of its location at the head of the Great Lakes.3

DEFINITELY SUPERIORDefinitely Superior Art Gallery in Thunder Bay is Northwestern Ontario's leading edge and nationally recognized, charitable/non-profit, professional artist-run-centre and gallery for the contemporary arts, formed and directed by artists to support contemporary art and the artists that produce it. Incorporated in 1988, Definitely Superior operates as a distinct alternative to public art galleries, museums and commercial art galleries. Their mandate goes beyond presenting visual art exhibitions and extends into multi-disciplinary activities such as artist workshops and lectures, artists film/video screenings, media arts installations, off site public artworks and interventions, performance art, interdisciplinary art, contemporary dance, experimental sound/audio, music , youth art mentorship/education, literary events and book publishing. They work to provide and increase opportunities for research, production, presentation, promotion and dissemination of work by regional/national/international artists, and the payment of professional artists fees, while encouraging media cross-over and multi-media work.

Definitely Superior's artistic endeavours are focused at the very nexus of creating new and experimental works, which are by their nature; research and development. Every year the gallery presents up to 50+exhibitions, events and activities, both in and out of the gallery, supporting as many as 900+ multi-disciplinary artists with a viewing and participating audience of 25,000, the majority being comprised of younger demographics. In the region of Northwestern Ontario, Definitely Superior identifies and encourages Contemporary Canadian artists working in all media. As a collective of emerging and professional artists, they engage themselves to identify their place and role as contributors in the regional and national context. As a result of their work, the artistic community in the region will be strengthened and the community-at-large will view and participate in the arts.10

Definitely Superior Art Gallery incorporated in 1988 to address Northwestern Ontario's need for an Artist-Run-Centre as little opportunity existed at the time for exhibitions by local artists outside the public gallery, with practically no opportunity for the presentation of new media works and other contemporary art forms. They have experienced three waves of change, each with a distinct group identity, membership configuration and perception of relevant socio-political issues as they relate to current art practices, issues, and audiences.14
