The final destination in our exploration of Northern Ontario arts organizations is the municipality of North Bay, bringing us nearly full circle from where we started. With a population of roughly 56 000, North Bay is a community of energetic, high-spirited people. Festivals, attractions and a wide range of special event activities blend with the natural attractions of the area. The combination of lush forests, spring-fed water and clean air creates a healthy environment for working, living and raising a family.

Situated between Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake, the City reportedly got its name when a young man writing an order for a keg of nails to be used in the construction of the first house in the fledgling community wondered how to designate the camp he wanted it sent to. While looking out over the bay that comes in from the lake, he quickly wrote "Send it to North Bay." The city is also known as the "Gateway to the North" because it lies on the border between Northern and Southern Ontario.

WHITE WATER GALLERY

One of the few artist-run centres in Northern Ontario, White Water Gallery is also one of the oldest artist run centres in Canada. Currently located in North Bay's downtown core, the Gallery has undergone many changes during its long history in an effort to stay in line with current developments in the contemporary arts scene of Canada. The Gallery hosts several exhibitions each year from artists across the country, and works collaboratively with other arts organizations to benefit their community.

The artistic programming of the White Water Gallery focuses on innovation and the furthering of current art concepts, keeping them at the frontline of contemporary art. Many are confused when they first hear about the Gallery, wondering how such an innovative arts organization exists in a smaller community like North Bay. Artist run centres rely on their communities for support, so most are found in more densely populated areas.

The White Water Gallery was founded in the early 1970's when a group of like-minded artists from the North Bay area came together to create an exhibition venue to showcase alternative works of art. This group of artists, which included Jane Agnew, Dennis Geden, Bryan Maycock, Gill Maycock, Jane Perry, and other local artists, eventually formalized into a not-for-profit organization, incorporating the White Water Gallery as an Artist-Run Centre in 1977. Today the Gallery continues to provide North Bay and the surrounding area with a quality gallery space that showcases Canadian artists from across the country. The White Water Gallery has gained a reputation internationally for hosting the best in emerging contemporary Canadian artists.

"There is an urge that contemporary artists feel towards experimentation and alternative art which is often viewed as politically motivated and controversial. The exposure gained from such activities labels these artists as 'trouble-makers' but it is my opinion that alternative artists do it because it is more fun."
- Clayton Windatt, Director, White Water Gallery, 2010
