Canoes have been used by the Abenakis for at least 8,000 years. It is an ideal tool to travel through vast forest territories dotted with rivers and lakes. But when they include a lot of mountainous terrain, portage is necessary to get from one lake to another. Portage can also be done on flat terrain. The canoe must be emptied, inverted on the guide's shoulders and carried to the desired destination.

Wearing life-jackets was not common in those days. The canoe could be used as a life buoy. It also served as an umbrella and a shelter when necessary.
