Decidedly, hares have weird ideas. Alanis Obomsawin remembers a legend told by Théophile Panadis.

More often than not, hares are easy prey. One day the chief of the hares tells the others: ?We are not respected. All the other animals make fun of us. They say we are not brave. The only thing left to do is to disappear from the face of the earth.? All the hares, big and small, start hopping toward the lake to jump into it. But a group of frogs notices them just as the hares lean their heads over the water. The frogs get frightened and quickly swim away in all directions through the lake. The chief of hares turns toward the others and says: ?We don't have to kill ourselves anymore. We have the respect of these little creatures that we frighten. Let us go home!?
