Casey ended up spending six months in the Ninette Sanitorium shortly after his return to Winnipeg for injuries received in the war. For soldiers returning to Canada, work was difficult to find with supply outstripping demand in a variety of sectors. After coming home to Winnipeg, Edgar studied at the Success Business College and attempted to enter the civil service, along with "fifteen hundred" people ahead of him. For a brief time, along with a handful of temporary jobs, Casey dabbled in wood working as a way to support his young, growing family. When this did not agree with his health he was encouraged "to take to the open air."

To this end he began employment with the Winnipeg Electric Railway Company, at first installing storm windows on their streetcars and buses, later as a trainer and operator of both streetcars and buses. He also worked with the Winnipeg Electric Company installing oil burners and selling gas and electric stoves. He supplemented his income with carpentry jobs and working concessions for Frank Schminowksy at River Park and Selkirk Park during the summer months. In 1933, the Depression brought layoffs to the Winnipeg Electric Company. Following this loss of employment and encouraged by his recent experience with managing Selkirk Park and concessions at River Park and other summer fairs, Edgar created the E.J. Casey Shows and began booking dates with agricultural fairs for the 1935 carnival season.
