The Stony Plain Demonstration FarmThe Demonstration Farm that sits adjacent to Memorial High School has a distinct part of the history of Stony Plain. The farm taught farming techniques from 1912-1924.
The purpose of the demonstration farm was to "demonstrate new farming techniques and to provide work experience and opportunities for agricultural students."
In the spring of 1911 the Alberta Department of Agriculture created six "demonstration farms" around the province. The creation of these farms was twofold, one was to demonstrate to local farmers new techniques and their possible potential and the other was to provide students of agriculture a means to practice their trade.
The Demonstration Farm has been a part of Stony Plain since 1912 and helped put the city in the forefront of agricultural development. It consisted of 480 acres and was put in the centre of the town.
In 1912 the Alberta government created demonstration farms around the province to have a school of agriculture. They were set up in Medicine Hat, Claresholm, Olds, Sedgewick, and Stony Plain. The schools essentially had two purposes; one get practical experience on a functioning farm and two to serve as a school to educate in the business of agriculture.
Over the years that the Demonstration Farm operated it became well renowned for many of the projects such as Holstein cows, potatoes and as well as world famous lilies and various "new" farming techniques.
The Stony Plain Demonstration Farm ceased educational operations in 1924. However, the farm still stands as living testament to the agricultural roots of Stony Plain.
