The war was over and people could once again focus on recreational activities. Tents were replaced with more permanent structures, either built on site or moved to a camping lot.

The R.M. was finding it more difficult to manage the Park with its many responsibilities relating to road building and medical care.

The Elks club that was very active in the early years was revived and was looking for a project.

Fishermen

Many fishermen claim there are no fish in Atton's Lake - but Brad and Stewart know different. They came home with over 40 after an evening of fishing last night.

Elks Lodge Provides - Entertaining and Varied Program for Atton's Lake Regatta:

Atton's Lake as a summer resort has been practically a dead issue for the past decade or more. This year it is beaming again with average Sunday crowds such as were seen in the late "Twenties and early "thirties. One reason could be the enthusiasm of the members of the Cut Knife Elks Lodge for the first project undertaken since their charter was renewed this year, and their insistence that our own lake and the surrounding scenery can be enjoyed as much as other lakes several hours drive away. At any rate whether they set out to prove that point or not, they certainly succeeded Sunday with the first water regatta ever organized in this community.

Highlights of the day's entertainment wee the aqua plane races managed by the Meota Boat Club. It was the first time in the history of the lake that this type of boat was used. Many of the spectators had seen these shallow draft, wide flat boats, all enclosed except for a narrow cockpit; and most of the others have seen them perform on the screen.

The races Sunday were run in two classes: one in which 7 ½ h.p. outboard motors were used, and the other with 10 h.p. There were no upsets or collisions in the race though earlier in the day Jerry Kernon of Sutherland upset a newly built boat which he was testing out for the first time.

Six aqua planes took part in the races but in many cases drivers spelled each other off. The first race was won by Jack Calvert of North Battleford; the second by Maynard Quehl of Battleford and the third by Jerry Kernon. Two races were run for the heavier motors with Art La Revere of Meota and Morey Milne of North Battleford each winning one.

The final race was open to aqua planes of any size and was won by Quehl. Other drivers who took part in the races were Dorey Edwards of Marlin, Irwin Steeg, Lloydminster, Earl Latrase Meota; Paul Cadrin, Meota, Wally Carter and Tom Bradburn of North Battleford.

The fact that all these drivers came from such distances to race when no prizes were offered is a testimony to their sportsmanship and enthusiasm, and all planes with the exception of one were built by their owners, one thrilling feature of Sunday's races is that in almost every case where a boat broke into the lead at the start it was outmaneuvered after two or three laps and failed to win.

The surfboard riders were not very successful in staying with their bobbing mounts, until Primrose How of North Battleford proved that it could be done.

A popular part of the day's entertainment was the concerts by the North Battleford Kinsman Band conducted by Norman Lehman. This band won second prize at Calgary Stampede this year and is noted for the youthfulness of its players. One was only ten and there were several twelve years of age. A local boy, Larry Elliot, 13, a member of the band before he moved to Cut Knife joined for a few numbers and played solo trumpet.

Other events which draw a large crowd of spectators were the softball games. The Cut Knife girl's team defeated Maidstone in a closely contested game. Lineup of the local team was Irene Corney, Beatrice Hannington, Janet Pellerin, Ruby Anderson, Beulah Hannington, Francis Winnacott, Thelma Grant, Ruby Radke and Mae Biggart.

In the men's games Wembley drew Paynton and was batted out. Wembley players were; John Fedeyko, Paul Rak, Bailey Rutley, Steve Waycliew, Joe Reinbolt, Bob Margot, Lynn Biggart, Stan Hewson and Carl Ramsay. Paynton was in turn defeated by the Ruth team.

It is thought that Sunday's crowd was the largest ever at the lake at one time. Cars completely covered the park with the exception of the ball diamond and traffic was controlled by several RCMP officers.

An open air midnight frolic was enjoyed by a large crowd of the younger set bringing the eventful day to a close.

Elk's Work

Members of the Elks Lodge are making good progress in their work at the lake. They have dug a new well, made some benches and are now working on a pier for boats. Gordon Blackstock has been appointed full time caretaker of the park. All those who can spare any time to help at the lake are asked to contact Bill Ross. He is described as the "bossman."

Elks Plan Big Regatta At Atton's Lake This Year

Yes, the fellow campers, Atton's Lake is really "up" this year, and the prospects are that it will stay that was for the season. It is anticipated that if the weather continues good that the Elks Beach at the lake will be officially opened much earlier, in fact, June 12 has been set as the tentative date, and the Elks are already planning a bang-up day. There will be a ball tournament and a special day for the kiddies with treats and fun for all. An opening day, all public and pre-school age children will be given free treats! How about that! And the softball team at Paynton say they can lick anything that Cut Knife can produce. Let's get out and practice those curves! There will also be a full line of sports for the kiddies, so start right now to practice jumping and running.

The Elks Regatta at Atton's Lake this year is tentatively set for Sunday July 10. Last year the Regatta was an outstanding success and this year, plans are for a bigger and better one.

The Lloydminster Lion's Band will be a feature attraction this year. You won't want to miss them! There will be more boat races, water skiing, softball and also free treats for the kiddies. All in all, it looks like a bang-up time for old and young alike.

The day will end up with a big open air dance, so keep the date open to attend the Second annual Elks Regatta.

There will be a caretaker in attendance at the lake again this year and also a booth on the grounds.

It is hoped that one of these days there will be some action by the Saskatchewan Power Corporation to extend the line as far as the lake. This would add greatly to the comfort of the campers. There is also talk that some eight to ten more cabins will be built at the lake this season.

So keep a little loose change around and help the Elks make your summer at the lake a lot more fun!
