As is the case with life in the early 21st century, inhabitants in the early days of Toronto lived dynamic lives that linked them to many parts of the vibrant city. A person who worked for a brewery or distillery would also attend a church, shop in a variety of shops and markets, frequent a local tavern and so on. But for those who were at the helm of larger commercial interests, such as Wm Gooderham and James G. Worts, their lives affected and were affected by activities that lead to shaping the evolving society. For example, Worts and Gooderham played significant roles in the development of railroads, banks, shipping, hotels, schools and churches.

This section provides a sampling of ways in which the perveyors of 'booze' helped shape Toronto in the 1800s.
