The farmers were enticed by advertisements in magazines to lure them to the scenic agricultural land in the region of North Norfolk. The rich wheat producing land sounded like it would be a great place in which to settle. The women and children helped as much as they could with gardening and looking after the chickens on top of the laundry, baking, cooking and caring for the children filled the ladies' days. The fellows relied on the women to help with breaking the land. Every farm had a few milk cows and would make home made butter that was used to barter for groceries such as tea and sugar. Farms had flocks of chickens for fresh eggs and meat. Also, a flock of turkeys was often kept to be sold in the fall.
