Once the grain was harvested the farmer might load the wagon and head to the local gristmill to get his grain ground into flour by the mill stones. In exchange for this service the farmer might offer payment in the form of pigs, chickens or other food stuffs. The Manitoba Agricultural Museum has a Gristmill that operates each July ,demonstrating how grain is milled into flour. This mill contains the original stones that were cut by hand from prairie granite.
