Progression of power: 1. horse power (smaller, hand-fed)
2. steam power - with feeder
3. gas engines

Operation:

1.Power source connected to the main cylinder shaft. All other working parts run by means of different belts.
2.Sheaves are put on the feeder and taken by a conveyor chain into the machine.
3.The strings on the sheaves are cut by rotating blades.
4.The whole sheaf drops to the main cylinder (made up of high speed rotating fingers) where the grain is stripped from the straw.
5.The grain and chaff drop down to a grain pan and the straw then falls to the straw walker.
6.Back and forth motion of the grain pan and straw walkers, cause the grain to drop through as it is heavier than the chaff.
7.Clean grain is then taken by a conveyor and bagged or emptied into a grain wagon.
8.Straw and chaff are moved to the large blower at the back and blown out of a pipe into a stack (hence the term straw stack).

At the Manitoba Agricultural Museum near Austin, Manitoba in July one can hear, smell and see the agricultural history of this region of Manitoba unfold as demonstrations of pioneer living and farming practices from the late 1800's to the early 1900's are put into action by the members of the Museum. The Threshermen's Reunion and Stampede is a one of a kind show that can entertain families of all ages. Grandparents can explain to their grandchildren how things were when they were growing up and explain how farming was "in the good old days".
