First One Room School in Alberta

The first one-room school was erected in Edmonton in 1881 and in the years that followed about 200 of these schoolhouses were erected every year. By 1914 there were 1,925 one-room schools in Alberta. It worked on a numbering system. The older the school, the lower the number. A school inspector visited the school once per school year to see that things were in order and the curriculum was followed. The inspector usually came unannounced. Not only was the school used to teach students, it became the hub of the community. The first one-room country school in the Caroline area was the South Fork School.

Signs and Maps

In 2001, the Museum had metal signs made to place on the original sites of the one room country schools in the Caroline area. Included in the signs are the dates of the opening and closing of the school. Former students will be able to visit these sites and relive their childhood memories.
Writeups on each of the fourteen schools will have a map showing directions on how to get there and signage at the location.

South Fork

April 27, 1908 South Fork School District #1803 was established and in the winter of 1908-1909 two broadaxe carpenters, Chas. Lineham and Geo. McGrady built Caroline's first school called South Fork. It stood 1 mile south of Caroline and on the south side of the Raven river where
the cemetery is now located. The first teacher, W.H. Devore, was from Texas. Two adult pupils that attended this first class were E. Elickson
and W.C. Browning along with several children. The log building was closed in 1941 and the children were moved into the Village of
Caroline.
February 7, 1948 South Fork District #1803 officially changed its name to Caroline #1803.
South Fork was the first school in the Caroline Alberta District.
