"Maps that had once been almost blank - showing occasionally the words "fur" and "timber" were added gold, silver, copper, and zinc. To the business life of northern Manitoba was added a great metal industry."
-The Northern Mail, June 9, 1939

Once the North was opened up by the coming of the railway, prospectors flowed into the region to stake their claim. The first mine to be worked in the area was Mandy Mine on Schist Lake, roughly 90 miles north of The Pas. It operated between 1916 to 1920. The mine was a "Glory Hole," meaning that no tunneling, shaft or hoist was needed because the copper vein came right to the surface. The mine was so hugely successful that it was reported in the first annual report of the Manitoba Department of Mines and Natural Resources that "for each thousand dollars spent drilling in this camp, over $1,250,000 in ore had been disclosed."
