Before reclamation took place, Lewis Island was used for hay cuts and pasturage; cattle were herded across the river on the Lewis Island Ferry. This landing was in place while the ferry was in use, about 1950, but continues to be used by the Creston Valley Wildlife Area, which operates Lewis Island (Six Mile Slough) as one of their habitat areas. Wildlife Area staff have undoubtedly upgraded and maintained the landing in the interim.
