The number 6 telephone dry battery was quite a technological advance since it replaced the previously used wet cells. Northern Electric started manufacturing these cells in 1906 in their Aqueduct Street plant. Their size determined the dimensions of the large single box wall phone. Depending on telephone use these cells could indeed last for five years or more.

By 1903 the first Northern Electric plant was becoming too small to meet the growing demand for telephone apparatus and supplies. A new plant was built in 1904 and completed in 1906 in the Montréal city block bounded by Guy, Notre Dame, Richmond and William streets. It had over 270,000 square feet of floor space, it too still exists and houses several businesses today.

It offered a hardcover booklet that provided all the required information on how to set up and operate a telephone company.
