In the summer of 1977, the Regional Assistance Officer of the Museums Assistance Program had suggested that the Dugald Costume Collection have a tea to gauge the depth of support for their museum project. Over the winter of 1977-1978 the Board and members of the Costume Collection developed the idea of a tea into the Dugald Costume Collection Garden Party with the first taking place on August 16, 1978.

The Garden Party featured heritage displays such as demonstrations of spinning (which took place in the Van Slyck's living room) and Belgian lace making. Springfield Reeve Jack Nicol and his wife arrived in an antique car to open the party. Everyone planned to carry on come rain or shine but luckily the weather was fine. Hundreds came and the Costume Collection Garden Party became an annual fundraising event.

The Van Slyck property was the ideal site for a garden party. Wyn and her husband Fred had developed the property into an award-winning farm site, winning over ten awards between 1953 and 1975 from the Manitoba Horticultural Society and the Manitoba Goodroads Association for Farm Gardens, including the Graves Trophy and the Cane Trophy.

«Over a period of eight years, eight garden parties were held in the Van Slyck garden. Baked goods, books, plants, and other miscellaneous items...were sold, and lemonade and afternoon tea were served. In later years, barbequed chicken dinners were prepared and sold...Each annual garden party raised several thousand dollars, all of which went towards the construction of the Dugald Costume Museum.»
