William Cuthbert and Robert Montgomery were amongst the most influencial pioneers of the economic development of the valley. Their lumber mill, Montgomery and Sons was the largest mill in the region.

Farming was a necessary part of life in the village. On both sides of the river the land was cleared and subsistent farming provided the locals with a means of survival.

Religion played an important role in the life of the settlers. In the early days the missionaries travelled the Coast by boat in the summer and by foot over ice and snow in the winter.

A Catholic church was built in 1899 in the community of St Jules. A Protestant church was also built around this time in Cascapedia. The influence of both churches caused mixed feelings amongst the people. Families were split and inter-marriage between Catholics and Protestants was frowned upon.
