Everybody who was anybody attended the gala grand opening of the Chalk River and Area Lions Club Recreation Centre on Saturday, January l7. A project initially conceived in the 1930's. Lions' members. Village and township officials and area residents finally saw their dream become a reality.
Congratulations and well-deserved thank-you's flowed freely from the podium. Scan Conway, MPP for Renfrew County commended the Lions' Club on their commitment and dedication to a project which began August 30, 1986 with the official sod turning and saw completion a mere four and a half months later. Mike Culleton president of the club expressed his thanks to fellow Lions, Wintario and the Village of Chalk River and its residents for all their hard work. Reeve Robert Seguin praised the Lions, commenting on the splendid appearance of the recreation centre which was built by local contractor, Clifford Labine. Reeve Seguin also introduced honoured guests in attendance who were not directly affiliated with the Lions Club such as Len Hopkins, MP Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, Lyall Smith, mayor of Deep River, Clare Dagg, Reeve of Rolph Buchanan, Wylie and Mackey Townships and
Frank Johnstone, president of the Chalk River Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. A plaque to commemorate the official opening of the centre was presented to Mike Culleton by Reeve Seguin on behalf of theVillage. Keith Blimke, Lions' community fund raising chairman said "We can all feel part owner of something that will benefit the Village of Chalk River and surrounding area." Blimke extended a special thank-you to the seniors of the community who were instrumental in the early years of fund raising.
Lucio Appolloni, Wintario representative, recalled how, in 1984, he was "summoned" by Village clerk, Pauline Rantz, "to discuss the possibility of a much needed community centre." Appolloni continued, saying that out of 14 projects under consideration for grants from Wintario last year, the Lions' centre was one of three approved in the area as the need here was greatest. "It is very gratifying as a member of the civil service to see a file number become a reality," said Appolloni.
Lions' District Governor, Jack Anthony noted that. with the new recreation centre would come the formation of a Seniors' Club, a Teen Club and a Lioness Club. A variety of other functions are anticipated for the new centre such as banquets, dances, family reunions, wedding receptions and sporting events. Upcoming events include the Sixth Annual Chalk River and Area Lions' Winter Carnival and Broomball Tournament on January 23, 24 and 25. the Cub Kar Rally on February 7 and Talent Night scheduled for late spring.
An engraved clock was presented by Dave Kelly, member of the Madawaska Valley Lions' Club to local president, Mike Culleton. Lesjte Burtt, local Lions' member received flowers in recognition of his excellent organization of the dinner and dance.
Following the delicious dinner and appreciation speeches, a large crowd enjoyed dancing to the sounds of the Variety Four. Many other area residents who were unable to get tickets for the sold-out dinner and opening ceremonies attended the dance to show their support for the Lions' Club's efforts. Special added touches supplied by the Lions' Club to make the evening even more memorable were fresh flower corsages for all the ladies and the offer of a ride home to anyone who had enjoyed themselves too much.
A long-time dream, the dedication of a club and the commitment of a community have made the Chalk River and Area Lions' Club Recreation Centre a reality.
