In fact, St. Paul's is nicknamed "The Graveyard of the Gulf", because sometimes up to four shipwrecks can be found, one on top of the other, on the ocean floor surrounding St. Paul's.

One such ship to meet it's demise at St. Paul's Island is the Isabella. It sank off St. Paul's in 1835. The Isabella was not the only ship to go down that year. The Margaret, The Great Britian, The Briton, and The Glencoe also joined her that year. This was not an uncommon number of wrecks, prior to the introduction of the lighthouses, an average of five vessels were lost on this desolate island's shores every year.

Brave ships and their captains that continued to make these risky trips to St. Paul's were, of course, the supply ships that families living on the island depended on for survival.
