On August 11th, 1911 Leon prepared to move his well driller to the Moline area to the Bollman farm. Here is where Leon met Annie Bollman, his future bride. From that time on Leon frequently mentioned Pettapiece and Moline. He spent much of his time with the family at a skating party, going to church, having a buggy ride or just visiting. He became very fond of Annie and a lifelong love for her developed.

Philip and Catherine Bollman had immigrated to Canada in 1879. They were young and looking for a better life than the one they were experiencing in Europe. Philip had been drafted into the army at 15. They arrived at their homestead too late in the year for them to build a home. During that first winter, they, along with their baby daughter Elizabeth, lived in a cave dug into the bank of a slough. A brother, John, offered them a cow so they could have milk for the baby. This cow shared their winter home. When spring arrived, a pregnant, Catherine, walked 23 miles along trails to Minnedosa to register their homestead, SW 6-14-20. Together, they built a log home that year and in 1890 replaced that with one of frame construction. Five years following this event in their lives, Philip died and Catherine was left to raise her seven children and run the farm. She and her sons were successful and acquired more land.

Annie Elizabeth Bollman was born July 9th, 1889 and grew up on the homestead at Pettapiece, Manitoba. The buildings of this village are now gone and the only thing that remains is the cemetery where Annie's parents are buried.

Photography was a hobby Annie had enjoyed long before her marriage. She had all the equipment...camera, tripod, developing chemicals, trays, kerosene lamp with a red glass front, printing frame as well as tinting colours. (Ruth McNarry-Meldrum)
