"While a heavy snowfall earlier this week made life troublesome for most Brant County residents, it created ideal conditions for a Cuboree held in Burford on Saturday. About 200 Cubs attended the day-long get-together at the Burford Lions Park. ... The boys didn't allow the cold to detract them from tobogganing or snowshoeing their way around the park's nature trails."

"Mohawk Park was 'packed' Saturday as more than 250 Cubs from Brant County held their annual Cuboree. The Youngsters were put through the paces of both sporting events and qualifying work for badges. ... The Cuboree, a local tradition begun in the early 1950s, is designed to promote individual achievement and group excellence. It also affords an excellent opportunity for promoting cub-scout solidarity as packs from all over the county assemble to join the fun."

"MONTREAL (CP) - Scouting is on the rise in Canada after 10 years of decline, says Reginald K. Groome, newly-elected president of the Boy Scouts of Canada National Council. Mr. Groome, ... said in an interview that 10, 000 youngsters have joined the Boy Scouts in the past year, boosting Canadian membership to more than 250, 000. 'We are observing a profound change in the youth of this country,' said Mr. Groome. 'there is a noticeable rise in interest in the outdoors, the environment and ecology .. and the result is the scouting is flourishing.'"

The Beret

The Boy Scouts wore the Stetson until 1968, when it was replaced by the Beret. Some groups continued to wear the Stetson after 1968, and some groups continue to wear the Beret today.
