Lobster are measured and placed in pipes to keep from hurting one another until they are banded with elastic band. Banding of the lobster are usually done by the fisherman's helper and the bands are put around each claw of the lobster to hold it shut. In days gone by, fishermen would put wooden plugs into the claws instead of banding them.
