This photograph shows the north side of the building, which faces the Black River on the south bank above the dam. There was a door facing High Street, as well as this door facing the river - which allowed access to customers travelling by watercraft. Today (2009) this door is boarded and sided over. This photograph was taken in 1970.

James O'Brien Bourchier built a log home near the site of his mills, but it burned down in the early 1840s. For a short time, he and his family of seven children moved into the general store until their new home, The Manor, was built. Susannah Jessie, James's and Jean's last child, was born in the general store in 1844. Susannah would eventually marry James Anderson Jr.

By 1846, James O'Brien Bourchier began selling one-acre lots of his properties. Between 1846 and 1849, only a handful of transactions were made, and only one business was set up on the lots - a tavern run by Joseph Keifer. Eight months later, in 1850, another acre was sold to Moses Hill. Mr. Hill operated a tannery, the only other industry in town besides Bourchier's mills.

The Smith's Gazetteer of 1846 describes the town as a "small Village in the township of Georgina, about two miles from Lake Simcoe, and twenty-three miles from Holland Landing; contains about one hundred inhabitants. There are in the settlement, a grist and saw mill, tannery, store, tavern, one blacksmith, and two shoemakers."
