The debris and bodies that washed ashore after the Great Storm told the story of the storm's ferocity and strength. Although much of the debris washed ashore in the weeks following the storm, the following spring, bodies and debris were still being found. This was the case of Captain Edward McConkey and his diary.

Edward McConkey was Captain of the Regina. On the night the Regina sank, it is speculated that Captain McConkey gave the order to abandon ship but he chose to stay on board. The entire crew, including Captain McConkey, were lost that night. It was not until the following spring that Captain McConkey's body washed up on the shores of Lake Huron. In his jacket pocket, his diary and watch were found. The diary was given back to his wife, Amanda, who lived in Goderich and she carefully dried out of the pages. His last entry is on November 7, 1913 and reads: "Sombra 2:10 a. Hazey, loading hay, cloudy & wind".

This diary is now part of the Great Storm of 1913 exhibit.
