Interview with Bob Arkell of Arkell Foods - Bob Describes his Experience Growing Up and Working in the Factory
I worked into it as a youngster. In 1946 I would come home from school and close the machines. The cans that came through and the peaches were packed, plums were packed and we had to look after the closing machines and put the lids on the cans and then you eventually crept up. You learned how to cook, you learned how to warehouse. And then eventually I diversified out into the field with the growers. I was more oriented with the growers and buying the fruit and vegetables as well. So I have had quite a knowledge in the fruit industry over the years, but today that doesn't mean too much.
