Percy and Mary Black. Mary Pugh was born on her father's homestead on February 28th, 1895.

Samuel Blackwell the first permanent family to settle Cartwright.

The first permanent family to settle in the Cartwright district was Samuel Blackwell. The family came to Canada from Ireland on sailing ships before the Great Famine in 1832 and 1841. They walked from Quebec to near London, Ontario, 300 miles through the wilderness, the men carrying 90 pound packs on their backs to carve out fifty-acre farms in the primeval forest. The family reached Badger Creek on April 8, 1880.

Mrs. Robert Bourns Sr., (Sarah Strong), was born in 1838 at Perth, Ontario. When her husband died in 1886, she came west to Cartwright with her two youngest children, William James and Ester Caroline in 1887. Her son John, was already established on a homestead in the Chesterville district since 1882.

George Boxshall was born in Tunbridge, Wells, England, in 1885 and came to Cartwright in 1902 at the age of seventeen.
