Sallows' Personal Style
Sallows Studio Manner - "Reuben Sallows was of a different mind. He wanted his pictures to portray character. He tried to make his subjects smile when they were in the studio. He used to talk to the children and tell them stories about the animals out on the farm and in this way by occupying their attention they forgot that they were posing for a picture. The results were different. It was unorthodox procedure in the days when it was felt that pictures had to be formal. The informal pictures somehow didn't go with the heavy gilded frames that were so comman but people started to become interested and his business grew. (SBH,1937)
Getting Pic Taken by Sallows - Niece of Sallows experience being photographed by Sallows - "She has a photo of herself as a child that he took. She described him as a very precise man. Although his photographs look so simple and natural, the lighting had to be perfect She said that her family just detested it when he got the camera out because sometimes they would have to sit still for up to three hours waiting for the lighting to be just right." For every good picture of his that you see he likely had fifty that he threw out." (Goderich Signal-Star-Sept19,1990-2)
"Mr Sallows as we always called him, was a part of my childhood. (Rose Bowler, nee Murray). He came yearly to S.S. No. 1 Ashfield to take our school picture. It was a "big deal" not only did we get an hour or more out of school it was an interesting project to behold. Mr. Sallows was a perfectionist in all things, so getting a group of 20 to 30 children all looking the same way and smiling as well would try the patience of a saint, let alone a mere mortal! His pictures always turned out great as I remember. Our old dog Sport got in many pictures with the school gang. We lived across the street from the school and the dog would come at recess and noon for the sandwich ends from the children's lunches, hence he'd get into the pictures. Mr. Sallows didn't seem to mind! I believe that Mr. Sallows took all schools in Ashfield over the years quite regularly. We owe Mr. Sallows a great deal for his work over the years. He photographed much of Huron County!"
