The first Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church was built around 1877-78 but was destroyed by fire in 1968.

The parochial house, a splendid three-storey structure survived the fire.

A large granite rock, deposited in the area by glacial action, was moved to the front of the church property by some of the parishioners, and made into a memorial.

This thirty ton, eight foot high rock was moved over the ice of Alberton harbour, a distance of three miles, with the aid of forty foot steel runners, and three, one ton trucks, and much ingenuity.

A Methodist Church in Montrose, about four miles away, was purchased and moved to the site in Kildare and became the Second Christ Church in 1925.
