"Country schools and of course those who taught in them did not have many resources. We did, however, have a small library and I remember the radio being used for both news events and school programs. Listening to the news of Marilyn Bell swimming Lake Ontario is one big event I recall as well as the singalongs for the 50th anniversary of the province, and the regualr school broadcasts.
Who can ever forget trying to learn to play the ever humble and annoying tonette. What about those scrap books we made? I kept mine for years and finally just gave my 'Royal Family' scrapbooks to a friend's daughter who was going through a royalty phase."

"I arrived in August, 1947. The '44 Trail' had been regraded and was really muddy when it rained. I had only low rubbers to go over my shoes; what a time I had to walk the mile and a half to the school!
The school itself was new and quite modern, built in 1946, with a wood and coal furnace in a full basement, and indoor washrooms upstairs in the cloakrooms. We had a library with an encyclopedia, a piano, a record player and several records, and a globe and maps, and of course blackboards and chalk."

"The learning games used to teach us the math facts in grade one are still imprinted in my mind - walking on stones across the moat to get to the castle for a reward. Each stone had a math fact on it: 2 + 3 ' , 2 + 6 ' , etc. Another one I remember was climbing the steps to the castle. In both games an ogre or monster was featured if we happened to not know the math fact ... you better believe we knew our math. Years later when I taught school, I used variations of the games with my students. Another activity was our weekly spelling bee - we looked forward to Fridays. It was so much fun and be darned if we were going to sit down so we studied our words! I pride myself in being a good speller today because of this early training."

Many students praise the activities that were a part of the Junior Red Cross. Students elected their own executive, handled money, conducted meetings and planned for school events as part of their training.
