Western Union North Sydney, Nova Scotia company officials and repair crews were more than critical of fishermen who, they say, caused the greater percentage of cable breaks. The officials claimed that quite frequently fishermen latched on to a section of communications cable and brought it up in their nets along with their catch of fish. When this happens, of course, they're supposed to release their trawls and return the cable to the water. To do this, would mean that their entire fish catch would be lost, making it necessary for them to set their nets again. So what many fishermen did is just cut the cable and let the cable company stand the loss. He saves his fish catch all right, but he cuts the flow of communications on that particular cable and the ensuing repair job is a costly and arduous one.

The Western Union Cable Office on Court St. North Sydney, Nova Scotia closed in 1962. It was the end of an era that started in 1875. The building remained closed until 1966 when St. Joseph's Parish purchased the cable office on Court St. This was to be used as a Parish Centre for many years. It became a gathering place for the citizens of North Sydney. In the late 80's the upkeep of the building was too costly for the Parish to maintain and the building was sold. The present owner is Gerard Dugas, Lower Sackville.

The Chain of Office from the town of North Sydney. Written on the chain in Latin are the words Gateway to the Continent. This was not only for the shipping and coal piers but also for the Western Union Telecommunications link with Europe. The wording was changed in 1949 when Newfoundland became a province. The wording now reads Gateway to Newfoundland.
