NEW TECHNOLOGY - Members of the Port Hastings Historical Society had an opportunity in 2004 to obtain and use new technology to record "The Canso Causeway's History and Impact" through a Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN) project. Brent Butcher shows committee member Rilla McLean the progress he's made at the kitchen table of the Gut of Canso Museum and Archives. Summer student,Tiffiany Snair, looks on while Jim McLean waits patiently in the Family Room.
This project came in time to be used for the fiftieth Anniversary of the Canso Causeway celebrations which will be held from August 7th to 14th, 2005. The actual re enactment ceremony will be on Saturday, August 13th at 2 pm.

THE MACINTOSH ROOM theme is Hobbies such as Father Colonel MacLeod's big tuna catch and his interest in preserving the Scottish fiddle music.
A photography collection includes old cameras, glass negatives and tin type pictures. We have a copy of Jack McCully's award winning picture, "Man in the Mountain", which was taken in the 1930's on the Cabot Trail. This Port Hawkesbury photographer did a great deal to document the history of the area as he produced and sold post cards of the hundreds of pictures he took of all aspects of life on both sides of the Strait of Canso.
"CROSSING THE CAUSEWAY FOR A CAUSE" will be unveiled in 2005 as part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations.

DON RILEY'S BRONZED SHOES - We have the bronzed shoes of local bachelor, Don Riley, who loved to show his stepdancing talent at every opportunity. There aren't many of us going to be fondly enough remembered to have our adult shoes bronzed and mounted on a beautiful piece of hardwood with a bronze plaque. We hear many of the ladies of the community tell us of their memories about their first dance with Don.
We have musical instruments, many scrapbooks and a special display on our talented fiddlers past and present including Natalie MacMaster.

VISITORS FROM OTTAWA REGION - For 22 years, we have been preserving the history and genealogy of our Strait of Canso communities. We have compiled family information, an extensive collection of church, cemetery and census records in accessible format. We're fortunate to have members who are able to assist visitors who arrive from out of the province and country following their need to find family information.
A group from the Ottawa area were given a tour in September 2004 by President Yvonne Fox.

NEW LOCATION - We look forward to creating new displays on model shipbuilding and being able to use new technology to tell the story of our Strait of Canso communities in a brand new facility soon. We hope we'll be situated by this scenic view overlooking the Canso Causeway and the Strait of Canso.
In 2000, we changed our name to an historical one that better indicates the area we cover. Our name and logo is ‘The Gut of Canso Museum and Archives- Ironing out the Past".
