In the fall of 2004, the Canso Causeway 50th Anniversary Society had people come out to a "Kitchen Party" to talk about their memories before and after the construction of the Canso Causeway between 1952 and 1955. It was noted that a lot of Cape Bretoners leaving for and returning from the World Wars would have passed through the Point Tupper railway station before crossing the Strait of Canso on the train ferry to and from Mulgrave on the mainland Nova Scotia side of the Strait of Canso.
As the only terminus for railway traffic onto and leaving Cape Breton Island, Point Tupper was a busy place.

Mulgrave on the mainland Nova Scotia side of the Strait of Canso was settled around 1785 and was called McNair's Cove. This fishing town provided wood, water, repairs, general outfittings and shelter to many American vessels.
The name was changed to Mulgrave in 1859 and by that time, there was a telegraph service, postal way station and boats and scows were used to transport goods and people to and from Cape Breton Island.

The community of Mulgrave was the terminus on the mainland for rail and car ferrying across the Strait until 1955 when the Canso Causeway was completed. Auld's Cove and Port Hastings then became the anchor communities through which all traffic would travel.
As Father Stanley Macdonald stated at the official opening ceremonies of the Canso Causeway on August 13th, 1955,"It's a great day for the rest of Canada" implying that now that they were physically attached to Cape Breton Island.

A&R Loggie established a large fish processing plant at Mulgrave in 1895 and it along with the railroad and ferries would become the major employers. Mulgrave therefore had all of the businesses necessary to provide for the needs of it's residents as well as all the visitors who passed through their community travelling to and from Cape Breton Island.

Porcupine Cove renamed Auld's Cove is located on the western side of the Strait of Canso. In the early years, fishing was the main industry and the shoreline was dotted with wharves. A lobster canning factory was built in 1903. There was a sawmill that was used by people on both sides of theStrait of Canso.
Once the Canso Causeway was built, a number of new businesses were established to address the needs of the travellers who pass through their community every day travelling to and from Cape Breton Island.
