August Kaiser had immigrated to Canada from Germany between the wars. Therefore he understood the sense of dislocation experienced by the Dutch immigrants and made an extra effort to make them feel welcome. Not only did he write a letter of introduction, but he asked a Dutch girl who was working for him to translate it into Dutch and add her comments. He proved to be particularly generous to the deVries family.
