WESTERN PORTION OF LULU ISLAND

This early 1980's photograph shows Steveston in the foreground and former farm lands to the north. Close proximity to Vancouver made this farm land more valuable as residential property than agricultural land. Open spaces still showing in this photograph have since been built on and this whole area is now completely residential. The B.C. Packers site on the waterfront has been redeveloped with a boardwalk along the river and residential houses, apartments and some commercial space.

The only farming still done in the Steveston area is carried out by Harold Steves. Harold is the great grandson of Manoah Steves, the first settler in this area. Harold lives in the family home built 1917 and farms a few remaining acres of the original farm, some of it outside of the dike. He specializes in the raising of Belted Galloway cattle and heritage seed from fruit and vegetable crops. He also operates a much larger ranch in the Savona area of interior British Columbia.
