In fact most of the original Rogers families are no longer in the area around Newmarket. But here we see a group who returned for a reunion in 2001.

It is interesting to note that one would expect that it would be a Rogers who would develop the town of Newmarket but it was not. In fact the person who began Newmarket does not actually appear on the list of people who came with Timothy Rogers. It appears that he was a Quaker by the name of Hill. The photo used is that of a later member of the Hill family.

It was Hill who about the same time that the Rogers and other Quakers were developing farms along Yonge Street, Dammed the Holland River about 3 miles east of Yonge Street and built a mill to grind the grain that the Yonge Street and other farms would produce.

At the same time he built a substantial building to serve as a trading post for dealing with the area's aboriginals who wished to trade for furs. Because previously these aboriginals had to go to York (Toronto) to trade their furs, the location on the river began to be referred to as the new market. It is thought that eventually this name began to be referred to as Newmarket.

Later this house, was called the Cotter house and can be seen here beside the dammed river, forming a small lake now called fairy lake. This substantial house later moved to a location on Eagle and Church streets, still exists as an apartment building.
