The 189 metre (620 foot) high LORAN (Long Range Navigation) Beacon Tower was constructed in 1947-1948. It was used to guide aircraft in the area. It was during that time of LORAN construction that the population of Cambridge Bay grew from a small trading post to a community of over 100 people with many permanent structures.

Today, the tower has become a settlement landmark and is still maintained by the Department of Transportation through the airport manager, and it is used as a weather station and radio communication facility. A local power source was installed during the original construction, and still provides power and is maintained on a regular basis.
