The village of Sutton was known previously as Bouchier's Mills, named after James Bouchier. James was the brother of William Bouchier, who first acquired the grant of land, and later requested one for his brother. The name change from Bouchier's Mills to Sutton supposedly dates back to a card game between James Bouchier and William Kingdom Rains, another British Military settler. Rains grew up at an estate called Sutton Lodge in Wales. Bouchier lost the card game.

Although steamers could be boarded from Jackson's Point for lake excursions prior to 1877, it wasn't until the coming of the railway that Jackson's Point became such a popular tourist destination. The boarding houses where ice workers lodged in winter welcomed visitors in the summer months, many of whom also built cottages, which could be rented for the week, or the whole season.
